(ALBANY, NY) Senator Dale M. Volker (R-C-I, Depew) today announced that the New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.7210) that will add the Western New York Southtowns scenic byway into the state scenic byways system.
Senator Volker’s Legislation would add a portion of United States Routes 20A, 219; New York State Routes 39, 240, 277, 391; and Mill Road in the Town of Aurora to the New York State Scenic Byways System and designate it as the Western New York "Southtowns Scenic Byway."
Senator Volker said, "This legislation will allow the municipalities along the designated Byway to be eligible for federal funding under the National Scenic Byways Program and Transportation Enhancements Program. This would allow these communities to redirect local financial resources and utilize those funds for other projects and programs that have a positive impact in their communities. Additionally, including these areas in the "Southtowns Scenic Byway" will have a positive economic ripple effect, via vehicle and foot traffic, and greatly assist in increased tourism dollars coming into our region."
On October 18, 2007, the New York State Scenic Byways Advisory Board, acting upon the nomination of the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway Steering Committee, recommended the designation of the Western New York "Southtowns Scenic Byway" as a New York State Scenic Byway. To be formally designated and thus included in the New York State Scenic Byways System, legislation is needed.
